Cavanagh is located in southwest Edmonton. Beside the community of Blackmud Creek to the north, 41 Avenue SW to the south, Calgary Trail to the east, and Allard and Callaghan to the west. Previously all agricultural, this area has been re-developed. Residential housing is modern in style and made up of single-family, duplex, and row housing. Green space, connected by a trail network, is abundant due to the community’s location near Blackmud Creek Ravine, which connects to Whitemud Creek and the North Saskatchewan River Valley. Cavanagh has two stormwater ponds and a creek as well.
A public elementary school and a Catholic elementary and junior high school are located in the nearby communities of Rutherford and Blackmud Creek. A future school and park site is also planned within Cavanagh itself. A small amount of neighbourhood commercial space is present, and other amenities are available at the nearby Heritage Valley Town Centre and Ellerslie Landing. Cavanagh is within driving distance of Currents at Windermere, South Edmonton Common, and the Edmonton International Airport. Residents can reach other areas of the city via Gateway Boulevard and Anthony Henday Drive. Future transit service is also planned for this community. Cavanagh is named after Terry Cavanagh, who was a city councillor and the first city mayor to be born in Edmonton.
